Redesigning a Hospital Management Software

We worked with Hospedia, a healthcare technology company  to further develop their hospital management software; we were involved in different aspects of the redesign, including global navigation, the hospital management dashboard, the ward management dashboard and a patient overview.

Based on research insights, we created wireframes and UI designs. We also worked with them to update their Style Guide with suggestions on best design practices.

The project was a great example of collaborative design between ourselves and Hospedia’s UX and Design teams.

The Challenge

Our client had several challenges, involving backend systems as well as internal capabilities and available time to focus on the research and design required. Sutherland Labs worked with Hospedia to better understand their user requirements, exploring the different types of users accessing clinical information, whilst the creative team focused on turning these requirements into usable designs. These were then tested to ensure they worked on both desktop and mobile devices. Other high level but important challenges included dealing with screen real estate, ranging from content displayed on large touch screens on a ward, to more restricted spaces on tablets and Smartphones.

Design

Due to the complexity of the information architecture, and the desire to move towards responsive design, navigation and data visualisation were our primary design focusses. We developed two navigation styles, horizontal and vertical, that were A/B tested with users. In addition to this we worked on wireframes and user interface design to present hospital information on a dashboard screen, we developed two dashboard styles, one visual based with a defined colour palette and a selection of different graphs and data, and one as a listview stripped back to the more essential data. Both of these options included wireframes for client review, followed by UI designs that were built in to prototypes and tested with users.
